Ayurveda uses buttermilk both to maintain health and to treat disease. Buttermilk is called ‘ Takra ‘ in Ayurveda. It is easy to digest and improves digestion because of its hot (ushna) nature.
Buttermilk is useful is treatment of digestive issues, indigestion, inflammation, lack of appetite, liver and spleen disorders, diarrhea (it is absorbent and bowel binding).
Recipe –
-To Balance all 3 doshas- 1 cup whole milk yogurt is blended with 2 cups room temperature water and spices are added – 1/2 tsp cumin powder, 1/4 tsp fresh crushed ginger and sugar crystals or jaggery to taste. This balances Vata with its sour taste, Pitta with its sweet vipak (the taste that emerges after digestion) and Kapha with its hot potency and astringent taste. Hence buttermilk is the best drink as it balances all three doshas.
–Balance Vata dosha – 1 cup yogurt with less fat is blended with 1/4th cup water – 1/2 tsp cumin powder, 1/4 tsp fresh crushed ginger and Himalayan or black salt according to taste. This balances vata dosha which in turn relieves pain eg:- helpful in Arthritis pain.
– In Hemorrhoids – Sitz bath for 15-20 min in luke warm buttermilk helps ease the pain, itching and inflammation due to the astringant quality of the buttermilk.
– Butter milk has a lot of other benefits thus makes a perfect drink.
